Several Tent Sites Closed at Trail Creek Campground for Tree Safety Concerns

Several tent sites at Trail Creek Campground near Lovell, Wyoming, have been closed following an inspection that revealed hazardous trees with dead or dying limbs.

While these affected tent sites are temporarily closed, other tent and RV sites at Trail Creek remain accessible to visitors. “Only sites that have potentially hazardous trees are closed. There are other available tent sites and RV sites available at Trail Creek. The park hopes to have the hazard trees removed by the start of the summer 2025 camping season,” a press release from NPS indicated.

According to its website, Trail Creek Campground, part of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, is located roughly 27 miles north of Lovell on Highway 37. The campground offers 16 tent sites and 14 RV sites, primarily designed for smaller RVs up to 28 feet in length.

The campground’s RV sites provide a rustic camping experience with vault toilets but no running water or electricity. For visitors needing accessible amenities, the park notes that Trail Creek’s facilities are limited. Paths and campsites within the campground are gravel and level, and the vault toilets are wheelchair-accessible, though they lack automatic door openers.

Nearby, the Horseshoe Bend Campground provides a different experience for visitors to the Bighorn Canyon area. Located approximately 14 miles north of Lovell via Wyoming Highway 37, Horseshoe Bend offers views of Bighorn Lake and the striking red sandstone cliffs of Sykes Mountain. The campground features 68 RV and tent sites, providing campers with a more scenic and developed camping option.

Horseshoe Bend’s 28 RV sites come with seasonal water and year-round electrical hook-ups, enhancing comfort for visitors during the summer season.

Recreational opportunities are available nearby for visitors at Horseshoe Bend, with a swim beach and picnic area within a short distance of the campground. Additionally, the Horseshoe Bend Marina and boat docks are accessible on foot, making this a convenient spot for those interested in lake-based activities such as boating and fishing.
