Kewaunee County Extends Deadline for 40-Site New Wave Campground Proposal

The Kewaunee County Finance and Public Property Committee granted an extension to local entrepreneurs Cody and Haley Gille for their proposed New Wave Campground project in Algoma. The committee voted to extend the deadline for developing 40 campsites to September 2027.

The Gilles have been working on the property on Ninth Road in Algoma for several years. The initial period was spent on site preparation, including the demolition of existing buildings and clean-up efforts. However, their progress was hindered when they discovered that the site’s underground wiring was insufficient for the 800 amp service they were installing.

Despite these setbacks, the couple remains determined to move forward with their vision. They plan to open 16 campsites later this summer. This initial phase will allow them to begin operations while continuing to work on further improvements and expansions.

According to an article published by Door County Daily News on August 1, the owners requested an extension to facilitate the development of new campsites, the construction of a bathhouse, the drilling of a new well, and the installation of a new underground power line.

They sought an extension until 2026 to fully open the 40-site campground and until 2028 to pay off the promissory note to the county.

The committee decided to offer flexibility, pushing the deadline for fully opening the 40-site campground to 2027. Cody expressed his gratitude for the committee’s decision, emphasizing that the “extension does not mean he is going until the last moment to finish everything.”

The situation of Gilles’ proposal underscores the importance of flexibility in timeline planning, thorough site assessments before construction, and potential local government support. By conducting site assessments, private RV park owners, developers and campground operators can identify early issues, manage delays, and secure necessary approvals and insights from the local council, ensuring smooth approval and avoid local opposition.
