The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has announced a proposed increase in campsite fees. A public consultation period will run until September 30. The final decision on the proposed fee changes will rest with the Regional Forester.

The proposed changes come after a recent market analysis, suggesting adjustments to align the forest’s rates with those of other “federal, state, county, and private campgrounds.”

If approved, the fees for many campsites, currently set between $15 and $18, would rise to a range of $20 to $24. Enrolled tribal members would remain exempt from these fees.

According to an article published by WXPR Local Public Radio on August 30, Karen Katz, the recreation program manager, emphasized that the proposed fee adjustments are necessary to match the current market rates.

“The proposed rates better match the rates at other federal, state, county, and private campgrounds. It’s been several years since these were increased on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest,” she stated.

The revenue generated from these fees will be allocated to the improvement and maintenance of the forest’s facilities. This includes essential services such as weekly garbage and recycling pickups, as well as ongoing operational costs.

Over the next few years, significant improvements are planned for several campgrounds within the forest, including Ada Lake, Anvil Lake, Bagley Rapids, Bear Lake, Perch Lake, Richardson Lake, and Spectacle Lake Campgrounds. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to enhance the visitor experience and ensure the sustainability of the forest’s recreational areas.

The forest has also completed improvements at several other campgrounds, including Black Lake, Kentuck Lake, Boot Lake, and Namekagon Campgrounds.

According to its website, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest offers a diverse range of campgrounds, catering to various preferences from modern conveniences to more primitive, serene getaways.

Within the Eagle River-Florence Ranger District, visitors can explore numerous recreational opportunities, including campgrounds, lakes, rivers, and hiking trails. The district also boasts three wilderness areas, Blackjack Springs, Headwaters, and Whisker Lake, ideal for rustic environments or multi-day camping trips away from the crowds.

Anvil Lake Recreation Area, located within the Eagle River District, features a campground with 18 campsites, each equipped with fire rings and picnic tables, and offers wheelchair accessibility along with easy access to drinking water and vault toilets.

The area also provides day-use facilities, including a 377-acre lake with crystal-clear water, a swim beach, a paved boat launch, and year-round fishing.
