Under Canvas Launches First Pacific Northwest Glamping Site in Columbia River Gorge

Under Canvas, a company known for its luxury glamping accommodations near national parks, officially opened its newest location in White Salmon, Washington, on May 29.

Situated on a 120-acre property within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, this marks the brand’s first site in the Pacific Northwest and the first not directly adjacent to a national park.

The new Columbia River Gorge site expands Under Canvas’ portfolio to 12 U.S. locations.

Unlike its other outposts that emphasize proximity to national parks, this site is positioned near natural and cultural landmarks in the Gorge, a federally designated scenic area that spans nearly 293,000 acres along the Oregon-Washington border.

It is approximately a 90-minute drive from Portland International Airport, with car travel necessary to reach the site and nearby attractions, according to a report by Travel + Leisure.

“We’re thrilled to open Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge as our first location in the Pacific Northwest, reflecting our commitment to connecting our guests with some of the most remarkable natural settings in the country,” said Matt Gaghen, CEO of Under Canvas.

“The vast landscape offers flowing waterfalls, lush forests, river-carved canyons with both Mount Hood and Mount Adams towering in the distance, and is uniquely coupled with renowned wine and cultural experiences.”

The site offers safari-style canvas tents equipped with private decks, plush bedding, West Elm furniture, and en suite bathrooms with hot showers. The property also features Stargazer tents, which include viewing panels above the bed for nighttime skywatching.

For outdoor hospitality business owners, this development underscores the expanding consumer interest in destination-focused glamping beyond traditional national park settings.

Under Canvas’ investment in a region known for its scenic value, wineries, and outdoor recreation, rather than national park tourism, may signal a shift toward alternative locations that still offer high natural and cultural appeal.

It also reflects a growing emphasis on experiential travel, with curated on-site offerings such as guided hikes, farm-based cooking classes, and llama treks now part of the value proposition.

The Columbia River Gorge location includes an on-site eatery that provides breakfast and dinner, with grab-and-go options replacing lunch service to accommodate daytime excursions.

Meals are prepared with local, seasonal ingredients, including seafood from the Portland and Seattle areas, and local wine and beer selections.

Guests can participate in regularly scheduled activities such as yoga, live music, and children’s programming. Under Canvas also continues its tradition of nightly s’mores.

“We hope guests leave with a deeper wonder and appreciation for the outdoors, and a better understanding of what makes this region so special,” Gaghen added.

The Columbia River Gorge site will remain open until October 27. Nightly rates begin at $229.
