The City of Soap Lake in Washington has resumed management of Smokiam Campground after years of private operation, with plans to upgrade the facility and align it with city policies.
Mayor Peter Sharp said the city aims to transform Smokiam into a destination that attracts both locals and tourists while boosting the local economy.
“We are committed to making Smokiam Campground a premier destination for both residents and visitors,” Sharp said, as reported by Columbia Basin Herald on June 18.
Since reclaiming the campground earlier this year, the city has begun updating policies to match broader municipal regulations.
Sharp noted that new literature and rules for RV camping are in progress.
“I’ve been working on creating updated literature and revising our policies related to RV camping,” he said.
Details of the transition from the Soap Lake Natural Spa and Resort, the former manager, are still being finalized.
In the meantime, the city has launched site improvements focused on safety and maintenance, addressing issues that had accumulated over time.
“We’ve cleaned up a lot of debris and addressed maintenance issues that have persisted for years,” Sharp said.
The city’s improvement plan includes new service panels, upgraded restroom facilities, outdoor showers, and enhanced landscaping.
Tent camping will return to Smokiam, along with family-friendly features like pet areas, updated fencing, fire pits, and possible recreation facilities.
Additional security measures, such as key code access and surveillance cameras, are also being installed.
“We’re excited to offer new outdoor showers and more grassy areas for families to enjoy,” Sharp noted.
An online reservation system is expected to go live by the end of summer, which Sharp said would help streamline the booking process and improve convenience for campers.
“By the end of the summer, we hope to have our online reservations fully operational,” he said.
Beyond infrastructure, Sharp said he wants city staff to engage more with visitors and create a welcoming atmosphere.
