Voting is underway for the inaugural Best of Camp New York Awards, a new annual program created to recognize independently owned and operated campgrounds across the state.
The contest opened September 12 and will run through October 13, with winners to be revealed later this fall.
The awards are organized by Campground Owners of New York (CONY), the trade association representing private campgrounds and RV parks statewide. The event is designed to highlight the properties that campers value most.
“This special award program was created to spotlight the campgrounds that campers themselves love most — with all nominations and votes coming directly from the camping community,” CONY announces.
Nominations for the awards took place from August 1 through Labor Day. “During this time, we encourage you to promote the contest and invite your campers to vote for your campground,” the announcement adds.
Winners will be announced at CONY’s Annual Conference in Cooperstown on November 2. The association said the timing will allow campground operators to gather in one place to celebrate the honorees.
To be eligible, nominees must be active CONY members in good standing. The group said this ensures that recognized campgrounds meet association standards and are engaged in the broader camping community.
“The system we are using has a complex algorithm to help eliminate potential voter fraud. Any votes that trigger the system are reviewed. Votes that cannot be verified or show signs that they may be fraudulent are eliminated,” the association indicates.
According to its website, CONY is a for-profit trade association representing independently owned campgrounds and RV parks across the state.
Established in 1963, the association has grown into one of the largest single-state campground associations in the nation.
Its members include a majority of New York’s privately operated campgrounds and RV parks, offering travelers a wide selection of destinations across the Empire State.
