Virginia’s Staunton River State Park Hosts Spring Star Party

Staunton River State Park in Virginia, in partnership with the Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society (CHAOS), is set to host its much-anticipated Spring Star Party. This unique event is scheduled from March 4 through March 10.

The Spring Star Party offers astronomy enthusiasts a rare opportunity to explore the cosmos from one of the few International Dark Sky Parks in the region. The week-long festival is designed to cater to stargazers of all levels, from amateur astronomers to seasoned professionals.

According to a press release, participants are encouraged to bring their telescopes and set up camp on the park’s Dark Sky Observation Field, known for its minimal light pollution and optimal stargazing conditions.

Highlighting the event, on Friday and Saturday afternoons, will be presentations from notable speakers, including the president of DarkSky International and a NASA ambassador. These sessions aim to enrich attendees’ knowledge of astronomy and the importance of preserving dark skies.

We’re excited to welcome visitors to Staunton River State Park for our annual Spring Star Party. With our pristine dark skies and knowledgeable astronomers, this event promises to be a highlight for anyone interested in astronomy and the wonders of the universe,” Park Manager James Wright said.

Admission for the full week is set at $110, with a weekend rate (Thursday-Sunday) of $60, inclusive of camping privileges on the observation field. Interested parties should register by February 26 to secure their spot by registering here.

The Spring Star Party will open its doors to the general public on Friday, March 8, from 8 to 10 p.m. This public night allows visitors to engage with astronomers and gaze at the stars firsthand. Attendance is free for the public on this evening, though standard parking fees will apply.

For those unable to attend the Spring Star Party, the park also hosts a Fall Star Party, scheduled for September 30 through October 6.

Virginia State Parks, managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, offers a variety of activities and amenities. With over 1,800 campsites and 300 climate-controlled cabins available for reservation, the parks provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration.

This annual event underscores the commitment of Staunton River State Park and its partners to promoting science education and environmental stewardship, offering a unique and immersive experience for all who attend.
