Drew Gruber has been appointed as the first park manager of Culpeper Battlefields State Park, the 43rd addition to the Virginia State Parks system.
The announcement follows the park’s dedication ceremony in June 2023 and comes as the site continues to evolve as a historical and recreational destination.
Gruber brings over a decade of relevant experience to the role, most recently serving as executive director of Civil War Trails, a multi-state initiative encompassing over 1,500 historical sites, including several within Virginia’s state park system.
His background includes a Master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor’s in historic preservation from Mary Washington College.
He is also certified as a travel marketing professional through the Southeast Tourism Society and has been recognized by the Citizens Planning Education Association of Virginia.
Gruber has held various leadership positions in the heritage and preservation sectors. From 2014 to 2017, he served on the Board of Historic Resources as a gubernatorial appointee. He was also president of the Williamsburg Battlefield Association from 2013 to 2022.
His published works and contributions to historic site management have established him as a knowledgeable figure in battlefield preservation.
“I am most excited to join the Culpeper community and to be able to work with and learn from the park’s Friends group,” said Gruber.
“Where else can you stand in the footsteps of soldiers, follow cavalry charges on horseback or paddle the battle? This park already offers a unique set of experiences for visitors of all ages and interests, and I am excited to share these gifts with our guests.”
Culpeper Battlefields State Park includes land associated with four major Civil War battles: Brandy Station, Cedar Mountain, Kelly’s Ford, and Rappahannock Station.
The park’s grounds and adjacent properties, managed by the American Battlefield Trust, offer walking trails, guided tours, and mobile app-based historical content.
“Culpeper Battlefields stands to become not only a key resource for regional residents but a destination for travelers from around the world,” Gruber said.
“The park is for everyone, not just those interested in history, but for recreation and environmental enthusiasts too. I look forward to seeing how these audiences help create the park master plan.”
Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
