Virginia Opens Grant Applications for $7M in Outdoor Recreation Funding

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has announced that it is now accepting applications for grants supporting parks and outdoor recreation projects through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

Up to $7 million in funding will be distributed through this year’s grant cycle.

The LWCF Stateside Assistance Program operates as a 50-50 matching reimbursement program, which supports the acquisition, development, and rehabilitation of public park areas.

Under the program’s terms, grant recipients are required to match funds dollar for dollar and maintain the supported park areas as public outdoor recreation sites permanently.

Since 1965, the LWCF has invested nearly $126 million into more than 420 projects across Virginia. These projects have included the creation of new public parks as well as improvements to existing facilities.

A recent Virginia Outdoors Survey found that residents across the state place high importance on outdoor recreation opportunities. The survey identified natural areas, trails, and parks as the most needed recreation assets.

Eligible applicants for the current grant cycle include state agencies, cities, counties, park authorities, and federally or state-recognized Indian tribes.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to cover 100% of the project cost up front and then seek reimbursement for 50% through the program.

Grant awards will range from a minimum of $125,000, representing a total project cost of $250,000, to a maximum of $2 million.

Those interested in applying are encouraged to consult the Virginia Outdoors Plan, particularly Section 4, which outlines grant requirements and includes an interactive map of past LWCF-supported projects.

This information is available at vop-vdcr.hub.arcgis.com.

To assist potential applicants, DCR will host a virtual workshop on Wednesday, June 11, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The session will provide guidance on application procedures and offer access to updated program manuals and other resources. These materials can be found at dcr.virginia.gov.

Applications must be submitted by email to [email protected] no later than 4:00 p.m. on August 28.
