Virginia DCR to Host May 19 Public Meeting on York River State Park Master Plan Update

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will hold a public information meeting on May 19, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the master plan update for York River State Park in York County, Virginia. The meeting will take place at the York River State Park Visitor Center, located at 9801 York River Park Road, Williamsburg, Virginia 23188.

According to DCR, the purpose of the meeting is to introduce the public to the master planning process, summarize existing park resources, outline upcoming public outreach and engagement opportunities, and gather input on potential new and improved recreational facilities within the park.

The master plan is intended to guide long-term physical development by assessing natural, cultural, and recreational resources and aligning future improvements with visitor demand. Virginia state park master plans are updated approximately every 10 years.

York River State Park is part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and is known for its estuarine environment, where freshwater and saltwater mix to support diverse plant and marine ecosystems.

The park also contains fossil beds and archaeological resources linked to Native American and Colonial-era history. It currently offers more than 40 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, along with a boat ramp, fishing access for both freshwater and saltwater angling, a fishing pier, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and seasonal boat rentals.

Educational programs and visitor center exhibits focus on the river’s ecology, history, and conservation efforts.

For outdoor hospitality and recreation businesses, the planning process provides a useful indicator of evolving public demand for outdoor experiences. Parks like York River often balance ecological protection with recreational access, and input gathered during master planning can influence future infrastructure such as trail expansion, water access points, camping-related amenities, and visitor services.

Operators in the camping, RV, and glamping sectors may find value in tracking these updates, as they can reflect broader regional trends in outdoor recreation preferences, particularly around multi-use trail systems and water-based activities.

The DCR will use public feedback to inform future recommendations for park development and improvements. Members of the public can submit comments through the “Your Comments Count” survey by visiting dcr.virginia.gov

Participants must confirm they are over 18 and select York River State Park to submit feedback. The survey also enters respondents into a monthly drawing for a $50 Virginia State Parks gift certificate.

Additional information about the master plan process is available at dcr.virginia.gov. Questions regarding the meeting can be directed to Planning and Recreation Resources at PlanningResources@dcr.virginia.gov.

The input gathered during the May 19 meeting and associated survey period will contribute to shaping how York River State Park evolves in terms of recreational offerings, infrastructure priorities, and conservation management over the coming years.
