The Greene County Board of Supervisors (Virginia) voted on a luxurious camping site on Tuesday.
As per a report, the rezoning and the special use permit were approved with a vote of 3-2.
People expressed opposition against the project and even against members of the board.
One person raised concerns regarding the location as it was right across from a school, and another concern was traffic concerning the school.
Another person also said it could draw people from outside the town and further increase an existing drug issue.
One person who spoke out in support of the project stated that it’s time for the county and its residents to acknowledge that tourism is the county’s top product.
During the voting, members of the crowd were yelling at the supervisors, labeling them as “traitors” and yelling “shame.”
The 40-acre property located on Celt Road lies just outside Stanardsville and was once being considered for an amphitheater. The project was rejected, and the amphitheater relocated to Charlottesville, which is now known as the Ting Pavilion.
Tuesday’s vote changes the zoning for the property to allow the project from Crimson Rock Capital to move forward.
The board then discussed a special use permit for tourist lodging to allow 144 units on the property, including a restaurant, pool, spa, and meeting center. The permit was approved by a 3-2 vote.
