The Dyrt: Historic Fire Tower Campgrounds Amongst America’s Most Coveted Destinations

The Dyrt, a popular camping app, has compiled a list of the top ten hardest-to-book fire towers in the United States. These structures offer campers a unique and unforgettable camping experience with incredible views, but booking them is notoriously difficult.

Sarah Smith, founder of The Dyrt, notes that camping provides exceptional experiences, and fire towers take that uniqueness to another level. They offer a 360-degree view of pristine mountains and are often hundreds of feet up in the air.

Camping has the ability to offer people once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Even if going back to the same campground, no two experiences are ever exactly the same,” Smith said.

“Fire towers take uniqueness to another level, literally and figuratively. You can be hundreds of feet up in the air with a 360-degree view of pristine mountains.”

Built in the early to mid-1900s, fire towers were originally used to spot wildfires before technological advancements made them mostly obsolete.

Today, many of these historic structures have been converted into highly sought-after campgrounds, with only one available campsite.

According to The Dyrt’s 2023 Camping Report, it was five times harder to find an available campsite to book in 2022 than it was in 2019. This has left many campers struggling to find a place to stay. However, The Dyrt offers a solution through its Alerts feature, which notifies users of cancellations.

The top ten hardest-to-book fire towers, according to The Dyrt, are spread across several states, including Montana, Washington, Idaho, California, Oregon, and Wyoming.

Some of these fire towers, such as the Double Arrow Lookout in Montana and the Girard Ridge Lookout in California, are booked 100% of the time. The Indian Ridge Lookout in Oregon was booked for 102 out of 103 available dates in the previous season.

Private campground owners and operators in the nearby areas of these popular fire towers may see an increase in business due to the high demand for camping. With so many people seeking out these unique experiences, private campgrounds may have an opportunity to capitalize on the increased interest.
