The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department announced plans to develop a new 20-acre campground, a project that officials hope will enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors.
Located within McAllen, Texas, the campground aims to provide public access to green space, outdoor amenities, and nature trails. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for October 15 at the Kappler Park Campground.
According to an article published by Texas Border Business, the future McAllen Campground will offer a variety of activities designed to immerse visitors in the area’s native landscape. With a focus on guided outdoor experiences, the campground will provide fishing, kayaking, camping, archery, and bike riding opportunities. The trail system will also allow visitors to explore the natural surroundings while engaging with the environment in a meaningful and educational way.
EB Merit Construction has been selected as the contractor for the McAllen Campground project. The project will be overseen by the McAllen Parks & Recreation Department, which will serve as the project manager throughout the construction process.
The total cost of the campground project is estimated at $1,861,709.03. This investment reflects the city’s dedication to enhancing its recreational offerings and providing residents with quality outdoor space.
In addition to the McAllen Campground, the city features the McAllen Nature Center. Located within the ecologically diverse Rio Grande Valley, the nature center spans 33 acres of native Tamulipan Thornscrub habitat and features two miles of trails for visitors to explore.
This site is a critical sanctuary for wildlife, with over 200 species of birds, 80 species of butterflies, and endangered species such as the Texas Indigo Snake and Texas Tortoise. The center provides a peaceful setting for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography while offering educational experiences about the region’s unique biodiversity.
