KOA Expands Texas Hill Country Footprint with New Round Mountain/Johnson City Campground

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has welcomed the Round Mountain/Johnson City KOA Journey to its family of campgrounds. The addition expands the brand’s footprint in the competitive Texas outdoor hospitality market.

The property is co-owned by Josh Garst and Alvah “Buck.” The duo brings prior hospitality experience to the operation, aiming to leverage the site’s location within the Texas Hill Country.

Situated on 25 acres within a gated community, the campground lies between Johnson City and Marble Falls. The location places the park centrally within the Texas Wine Country, a key draw for regional tourism.

The facility currently offers more than 60 oversized RV sites. All sites are equipped with full hookups to accommodate modern rig requirements.

Operational amenities include high-speed WiFi, a laundry facility, and a propane filling station. The property also features a dog park to service the growing pet-friendly travel demographic.

As part of the KOA Journey sub-brand, the park focuses on convenience for transient travelers. This includes proximity to highways, well-lit after-hours check-in capabilities, and a selection of RV supplies.

Site inventory emphasizes long pull-thru sites designed for easy setup. These features cater to road-trippers seeking a hassle-free stopover during long transits.

Josh Garst, co-owner of the location, identified market demand as a catalyst for the franchise agreement. He emphasized the area’s potential for high-quality outdoor hospitality.

“We were inspired by the strong demand for outdoor recreation in this area and the opportunity to deliver a high-quality KOA camping experience,” Garst said.

Garst noted the specific appeal of the local geography. “This region is known for its natural beauty, and we’re excited to provide a space where guests can unwind, connect with nature, and explore everything the Hill Country has to offer.”

The ownership team has announced capital improvement plans to further develop the asset. Planned enhancements include a new playground, a convenience store, and an additional bathhouse.

Future phases of development will involve the installation of Deluxe Cabins and a remodel of the registration building. These investments aim to ensure the inventory evolves alongside changing guest needs.

The acquisition capitalizes on robust spending trends in the outdoor sector. According to KOA’s 2024 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, campers injected $61 billion into local economies, with 27% specifically interested in food tourism and small-town travel.

The Round Mountain/Johnson City KOA Journey operates year-round at 575 E RR 962. The park joins a system of more than 500 open-to-the-public locations across the United States and Canada.
