Edgefield County leaders in South Carolina are weighing changes to local ordinances after a proposal for a 70-lot RV park in Trenton drew strong opposition from residents.
According to a news article by WRDW, the planned park, located near Green Oak Road and Edgefield Road by the Horse Creek Nature Preserve, was previously stalled in July amid citizen concerns about possible water contamination in nearby ponds and creeks.
Neighbors have specifically raised the issue of “black water” from RVs, claiming it is more toxic than typical sewage and could threaten the surrounding environment.
“We want to protect all those ponds and all those creeks from any sort of black water contamination,” said Randy Dedrickson, president of Horse Creek.
“We’re very delighted to see that. Because now what’s going to happen here in Edgefield, instead of one page of RV park ordinances, they’re up to nine. And it’s going to be very good for the community,” Randy added.
The proposed changes, brought forward by Horse Creek Nature Preserve, are intended to safeguard the area’s waterways and address environmental concerns that helped halt the park’s approval earlier this summer.
County leaders could soon incorporate the new rules into the official ordinance, potentially setting stricter standards for future RV park developments.
The changes highlight how environmental protection concerns are increasingly shaping local regulations.
Developers and operators may need to adapt to more comprehensive permitting requirements and stricter waste management standards when building near sensitive ecosystems.
