CARVC’s Dee Witting and Lakewood Camping Resort Win Top Honors at OHI’s Awards of Excellence

On November 5, the Carolinas camping community celebrated notable achievements during the Outdoor Hospitality Conference & Expo in Oklahoma City, where OHI awarded its annual Awards of Excellence. Dee Witting, executive director of the Carolinas Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (CARVC), and Lakewood Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, received top honors, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the outdoor hospitality industry.

The awards luncheon, a key event in OHI’s conference, gathered industry leaders from across the country. Formerly known as the National Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds, OHI has supported the outdoor hospitality industry for nearly 60 years. The awards celebrate those who exemplify dedication and innovation within this growing sector.

Witting was honored with the 2024 State Leadership Award, presented to individuals demonstrating professional commitment and a meaningful contribution to both their state association and OHI. This accolade acknowledged Witting’s substantial efforts in advancing the Carolinas’ camping sector and her leadership role within CARVC.

CARVC, a trade association representing over 140 campgrounds and RV parks in North and South Carolina, advocates for the industry’s growth and improvement. The organization connects members with resources, industry suppliers, and offers advocacy, aiming to elevate the camping experience in the region.

With a background as an RV park owner, Witting joined CARVC as executive director in 2016, bringing firsthand industry experience to her role. She oversees the association’s daily operations, including member engagement, advocacy, and the annual CARVC conference

According to a press release, Witting has dedicated significant efforts to aiding campgrounds affected by Hurricane Helene. Her work has involved connecting these campgrounds with resources for recovery and promoting Carolinas camping to sustain the local economy.

Reflecting on her unexpected recognition, Witting expressed appreciation for her team, stating, “I had no idea I was going to be receiving this award; I was so surprised! I am just very honored to be recognized for the work I’ve done to help CARVC move forward, but it takes a team.” CARVC’s board chairman, David Seaborn, echoed this sentiment, praising Witting’s dedication to the association’s mission.

Alongside Witting, Lakewood Camping Resort was honored as the 2024 Mega Park of the Year, marking a significant achievement for this Myrtle Beach staple. Established in 1959 by Carl and Marion Perry, Lakewood was the first privately owned campground on the Grand Strand’s oceanfront.

Now managed by the founder’s descendants, Lakewood spans a half-mile of beachfront and includes over 1,000 sites, a water park, multiple pools, sports facilities, dining options, and an amphitheater.

Kevin Strickland, park manager at Lakewood, expressed gratitude for the award, noting, “This award is a testament to our team’s commitment to providing guests with a memorable experience. We’re truly honored to be recognized by leaders in the outdoor hospitality industry.”

Seaborn also extended his congratulations to Lakewood, stating, “Lakewood Camping Resort is so deserving of the Mega Park of the Year award! Lakewood’s owners and staff are some of the most generous people I’ve met.”

OHI’s Awards of Excellence, described on its website as recognizing the “best of the best” in outdoor hospitality, emphasize dedication and industry leadership. The awards reflect a peer-reviewed selection process, aimed at spotlighting businesses and individuals who elevate industry standards.
