The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will commence a major renovation project at Burlingame State Campground in October. The initiative aims to upgrade the campground’s shower and restroom facilities, focusing on the Mills Camp, Midpark North, and Fish Camp areas.
The construction will replace outdated structures, beginning with the closure of the existing facilities on October 1.
The $18 million project, funded by the voter-approved 2021 Beach, Clean Water, and Green Economy Bond and a federal grant, will be completed in two phases. The first phase is expected to conclude by spring 2026, while the second phase, covering Main, Midpark South, and Legiontown areas, will begin in October 2025 and is projected to finish in April 2027.
During the renovations, campers will experience some disruptions, including potential daytime noise and the need to use alternate restroom and shower facilities. DEM advises campers who prefer to relocate to contact the Burlingame Permit Office upon check-in or reach them by phone or email.
For those wishing to alter or cancel their reservations for the 2024 season, the DEM has directed campers to use Reserve America’s website or call their customer service. Refund policies apply, and the booking process for the 2025 season will open once the construction schedule is finalized.
East Providence-based Caputo & Wick designed the new facilities, while Tower Construction Corp., based in Cranston, will handle the demolition and construction process. The project underscores the state’s commitment to modernizing its parks and campgrounds for future visitors.
According to an article published by The Sun, the new facilities will be ADA-compliant and gender-neutral, featuring modern amenities such as energy-efficient lighting, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, and hot water showers.
