$18 Million Burlingame Campground Improvement Project Advances With First Facilities

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced the completion of the first phase of an $18 million facilities improvement project at Burlingame Campground, delivering three new restroom buildings and beginning work on additional upgrades scheduled for completion in 2027.

The shower and restroom modernization project is funded through the voter-approved 2021 Beach, Clean Water, and Green Economy Bond and a $2 million federal grant.

The completed facilities are located in the Midpark North, Fish Camp and Mills Camp sections of the campground.

The new buildings replace aging infrastructure and feature coin-operated indoor and outdoor hot showers, energy-efficient lighting, ADA-compliant accessibility, new septic systems and water-conserving plumbing fixtures.

Each structure also includes a private room equipped with a toilet, sink and changing table.

The buildings are open to the public, although campers may encounter workers completing minor cosmetic work over the coming weeks.

According to an article published by The Sun, phase 2 of the project is expected to conclude by April 2027 and includes the replacement of three more bathhouses serving the Main Camp, Legion Town and Midpark South areas.

The older structures in those sections have already been demolished, and construction is set to continue through the summer, fall and winter.

As work progresses, all 2027 camping reservations have been temporarily suspended while RIDEM develops a request for proposals for a reservation services provider for 2027 and beyond.

The campground beach will remain closed for the current season because of active construction near the Main Camp shower and restroom project. Fewer campsites will also be available.

There will be weekday construction activity bringing noise and vehicle traffic. No work is scheduled on weekends or holidays. RIDEM is advising visitors to review maps on its website showing closed areas and the nearest available restroom facilities.

Alternative recreation areas are available nearby, including the Burlingame State Picnic Area and Ninigret Park.
