This month’s heavy snowfall will delay the opening of some higher elevation campgrounds within the Deschutes National Forest (Oregon).
According to a report, the snow is causing delays in the annual safety inspections, repairs and maintenance, and the removal of hazard trees within U.S. Forest Service campgrounds.
April 22, which marks the beginning of the fishing season, coincides with campgrounds opening in the Crane Prairie and Wickiup Reservoirs.
These areas are tentatively scheduled to open on April 29. Further storm activities could delay the opening of campgrounds.
This week, the Forest Service will be working to clear snow off the Sunset Cove Boat Ramp and Day Use Area to allow fishing access to Odell Lake by Friday.
Early season camping is accessible at all year-round campgrounds in the Metolius Basin, including Allen Springs, Camp Sherman, Pine Rest, and Lower Bridge campgrounds in the Sisters Ranger District.
