The Douglas County Parks Department will temporarily close the Upper Campground and Day Use Area at Charles V. Stanton Park starting Sunday, September 15, to facilitate significant renovations.
Located along the South Umpqua River, one mile north of Canyonville, the closure is scheduled to last from September 23 through May 24, 2025, as construction teams undertake a rehabilitation of the park’s facilities.
According to an article published by KQEN News Radio, the closure is necessary to allow the renovation work. The Lower Campground, typically closed during the winter months, will remain accessible throughout the construction period. Visitors will also continue to have access to the South Umpqua River during this time.
Improvements planned for the Upper Campground include the complete remodel of RV sites, the installation of new underground utilities, and a new road layout. A new restroom and shower building will also be constructed, enhancing the experience for campers when the site reopens.
In addition to the campground upgrades, the playground area will receive notable improvements. A new zipline play structure will be added, and the existing helicopter play structure will be repaired, powder-coated, and integrated into the expanded playground space.
The Day Use Area will also undergo improvements. Crews will repave the parking lot, install new curbs, and add stormwater catch basins. Additional parking spaces will be constructed to accommodate more outdoor enthusiasts.
In addition to the Upper Campground, Douglas County Parks offers outdoor adventures, providing access to a diverse range of recreational opportunities. Whether exploring more than 30 wineries with 57 grape varieties, boating on tranquil waters, or camping under a canopy of stars, these parks serve as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Visitors can enjoy world-class fishing, crabbing, and clamming along the coast. Hiking trails, disc golf courses, and horseback riding paths also allow visitors to connect with nature.
