In Cascade Locks, Oregon, Port of Cascade Locks commissioners are deliberating on a proposal to increase the fees for their campground services, according to a Columbia Gorge News report. This consideration came to light during their meeting on March 5, where the potential adjustment of nightly rates to $75 was discussed, requiring further analysis.
Cascade Locks offers an array of activities that cater to adventurers of all types. With its iconic Bridge of the Gods serving as a passage for the Pacific Crest Trail, the area attracts hikers and bikers from across the globe, drawn to its expanding network of trails designed for both hiking and mountain biking.
Alternatives to a straight fee increase were considered, including expanding the number of campsites or introducing incremental rate hikes.
The proposed fee structure aims to standardize charges across all types of lodging within the campground, setting a flat rate of $45 or $75 for tent camping year-round. This adjustment would also see an increase in fees for hiker and biker campsites, with PCT hikers paying $10 per night, including shower access, and CGRA campers facing a new rate of $25 per night.
Parker Nelson, the operations manager, highlighted the necessity of a rate increase for the campground. The campground serves a diverse group of users, including fishermen utilizing local boat ramps and tourists visiting the area.
Currently, the campground’s fees range from $21 to $41 during the off-peak season and $31 to $41 in the peak season. Special rates apply for Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers and Columbia Gorge Racing Association (CGRA) campers, with PCT hikers paying $5 for a night’s stay and an additional $5 for shower access, while CGRA campers are charged $15 per night.
This proposal aligns the campground’s fees with those of nearby private campgrounds, which can charge up to $80 a night. However, some commissioners expressed concerns over the fairness of such comparisons, given the public ownership of port campgrounds.
According to the report, Commissioner Carrie Klute, emphasizing the importance of maintaining affordable rates, called for a detailed financial analysis before implementing any significant fee adjustments.
The scenic Marine Park adds to the allure, providing visitors with the unique opportunity to embark on day and dinner excursion cruises aboard the Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge. This picturesque setting is a haven for those seeking tranquil waters for sailing and outrigger canoeing and offers a perfect spot for picnicking and swimming at the Marine Park beach.
