New RV Park Brings Joy to St. Helens: Owners’ Vision Comes True

In the heart of St. Helens, Oregon, Mark and Karen Comfort have transformed 3 1/2 acres of forested land into a thriving Deer Meadow RV Park. Located at 58551 Kavanaugh Street, the park opened on January this year, culminating a journey that began in 2019.

The park’s name reflects its natural surroundings. Mark Comfort, as quoted in a Columbia County Chronicle & Chief report, explained, “We call this Deer Meadow RV Park because [of] the amount of deer that we get in here. They walk through the park still. We’ve set it up so it’s fenced, but there’s an opening so they can get through. They’re city deer, so they don’t mind people!” This coexistence with wildlife sets it apart from typical urban RV destinations.

With 28 sites, Deer Meadow RV Park has been operating at full capacity for much of the summer, boasting a waiting list. This success is notable given the challenges faced during development, including those presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic significantly impacted the park’s timeline. Mark Comfort, with 40 years of construction industry experience, faced increased material costs and supply chain disruptions. The Comforts persevered, driven by their vision of creating a welcoming community for RV enthusiasts and those seeking affordable housing options.

Deer Meadow RV Park’s clientele includes individuals needing affordable housing and tradespeople working with local companies. The park offers flexible leasing options, including daily, weekly, and month-to-month rates, catering to both short-term visitors and long-term residents.

Amenities include an indoor lounge, a common area near the office, a dog park, laundry facilities, private baths, and essential utilities including water, sewer, WiFi, garbage disposal, and electricity.

Residents like David and Cyndi Lorenz have embraced the park as their home. David Lorenz shares, “We’re just happy we found Mark and Karen. This is an awesome place to live.” This sentiment is echoed by other residents, including Anna Marie Swick, who helps at the park’s office and praises the tight-knit atmosphere.

The Comforts regularly offer special gestures to show appreciation, such as complimentary electricity for a month or custom-ordered flowers. Karen Comfort emphasizes, “Every month, we want to do something for them, to let them know that we really do appreciate them. They’re not just a check, or a fistful of cash; they’re people we care about.”

The park also supports local youth employment. High school students Lillian Loudermilk and Channing Henderson work part-time, assisting with landscaping and other tasks. This initiative provides valuable work experience for young community members while strengthening the park’s local ties.

As Deer Meadow RV Park grows, it demonstrates the success of Mark and Karen Comfort’s vision, providing a welcoming environment for guests, whether staying for a night or making it their permanent home.
