Lincoln County is exploring an ambitious plan to expand outdoor recreation opportunities at Brown Park, situated along State Highway 229. The park, known for its natural beauty and river frontage, may soon undergo a transformation to meet growing public interest in outdoor activities while prioritizing environmental conservation according to an article by Lincoln County Leader.
Kelly Perry, Lincoln County Parks operations supervisor, recently presented a vision for the park to county commissioners. Perry emphasized the increasing public desire for outdoor recreation and connecting with nature. She noted that the land was given to Lincoln County specifically to ensure community access to nature while prioritizing conservation.
In outlining goals for a potential master plan, Perry focused on access, restoration, and functionality at Brown Park. The plan aims to create an inclusive, accessible space for visitors to experience nature, actively protect and enhance the land’s ecological functions, and create multi-use spaces that balance recreation and conservation.
Securing funding is crucial for the project’s success. Perry explained that the county is exploring options such as grants and public-private partnerships to implement potential improvements. The recent park rezoning is a critical step in opening up opportunities to apply for grants.
Potential improvements for Brown Park could include the addition of group campsites, trails, cabins, and non-motorized boat launches. These amenities would aim to enhance visitor experience with minimal ecological impact. Perry stated that any potential design would be shaped by the site’s existing ecology.
One of the key challenges in developing the park is its location within a flood hazard area. This designation, which indicates a high risk of flooding, would require any new structures and improvements to comply with Lincoln County’s flood hazard area regulations.
As the county explores these possibilities, community engagement and continued collaboration between county officials, environmental experts, and local residents will be crucial. The potential development of Brown Park represents not just an expansion of recreational facilities, but a commitment to preserving natural spaces for future generations to enjoy.
