Gales Creek Campground and Reehers Camp Opening on May 19

Gales Creek Campground (Oregon) is set to welcome overnight campers on Friday, May 19, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry. Day use and trailhead areas within the campground are already open to the public.

Located along Gales Creek on the eastern edge of the Tillamook State Forest, the campground offers 16 vehicle sites and three walk-in tent sites.

Amenities include a day-use area, restrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, and trail connections to several popular hiking and mountain biking trails.

While equestrian access is not available at this site, opening on the same day is the nearby Reehers Camp in Timber, which provides horse-friendly facilities. Reehers Camp features ten equestrian sites with corrals and seven non-equestrian vehicle sites.

Despite the landslide closure of Timber Road between Strassel and Cochran roads in early March, visitors can still access the community of Timber via Highway 26 and Timber Road.

Both campgrounds are connected by the Gales Creek Trail, which has trailheads at the summit on Highway 6, Gales Creek Campground, Reehers Camp, and the Storey Burn Trailhead. Covering a total of 12.7 miles, the Gales Creek Trail winds through the forest once known as the Tillamook Burn. The section linking Gales Creek Campground and Reehers Camp is a popular hiking and mountain biking route of just over 10 miles.

Private campground owners and operators can draw inspiration from Gales Creek Campground and Reehers Camp. By offering a diverse range of facilities and amenities, these campgrounds cater to various outdoor enthusiasts, including hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders.

Ensuring accessibility and connectivity between campgrounds through well-maintained trails is also crucial in enhancing the overall camping experience.

For more information on the trail, visit the Oregon Department of Forestry’s recreation website, where you can also find opening days for campgrounds, trails, and other points of interest in the Tillamook State Forest.

The cost for staying at Gales Creek Campground is $20 for vehicle sites, $15 for walk-in tent sites, and $5 for extra vehicles. For Reehers Camp, fees are $20 for vehicle sites and $5 for extra vehicles.
