ODNR to Roll Out New Reservation Platform for State Forest Camping

A new reservation system for campsites at Hocking State Forest and Mohican-Memorial State Forest will launch this fall, marking a shift from the current first-come, first- served model.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry announced the change to improve planning, service delivery, and campground management.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 1, campers at both state forests will be required to reserve campsites online before arrival.

The system is currently open for booking reservations with start dates on or after that date.

All permits will be issued digitally through the system and must be presented at the campsite, either printed or saved on a mobile device.

“Ohio’s state forests provide visitors with a unique camping experience,” ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser said, as reported by Outdoor News.

“This new system will not only allow people to plan ahead but give us a better idea of who is using the campground and allow us to improve our services,” Balser added.

The Hocking State Forest Horse Campground offers 23 campsites under the new system, while Mohican-Memorial State Forest has seven park-and-pack sites available.

Until Sept. 1, both forests will continue to allow camping on a first-come, first-served basis.

Campers making reservations will be required to provide their name, address, vehicle license plate number, and the type of camping equipment they plan to use.

There are no fees to make, modify, or cancel reservations. The new system also imposes usage limits, including a maximum of 14 reserved days within any 30-day period and a cap of two reserved campsites for the same date at a single campground.

Check-in for all reserved campsites begins at 3 p.m. on the first day of the reservation, and check-out must be completed by 1 p.m. on the final day.

Webpages for both Hocking and Mohican-Memorial state forests have also been updated with links to the new reservation system, which operates independently from ReserveOhio.com.
