North Dakota Parks & Recreation Unveils Plans for 14th State Park

North Dakota Parks & Recreation Department (NDPRD) announced its plans to develop the state’s 14th state park within the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area (PGSRA), according to a press release.

Pembina Gorge State Park is set to offer a range of accommodations, including approximately six cabins and over 50 RV sites, each equipped with power and water hookups. The park will cater to more traditional camping experiences by providing numerous walk-in primitive tent sites.

“We’re incredibly excited to break ground on this long-awaited project. Our vision is to enhance and grow the area into an overnight destination property that draws visitors throughout all four seasons,” NDPRD Director Cody Schulz said in the press release.

This development, located near Walhalla, is an addition to North Dakota’s park system, and the department is currently seeking construction bids for the project. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new state park is scheduled for mid-May, with further details to be announced.

A master planning effort completed in 2014 laid the groundwork for the park’s development, outlining a vision for visitor experiences, facility development, resource conservation, and management.

According to its website, the park’s plans include the construction of family-friendly restroom and shower facilities in the southern portion of the campground. These facilities are designed to accommodate multiple guests, ensuring a comfortable stay. Furthermore, vault toilets will be strategically placed throughout the campground.

In addition, the plan will feature additional parking facilities. These are intended to support the already extensive trail system within PGSRA and the surrounding region, facilitating access for both off-highway vehicle (OHV) and snowmobile users.

Funding for the park’s development includes a $6 million allocation approved by the 2023 Legislature, supplemented by an additional $2 million from a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant.

Plans for future development at the park include the addition of a visitor center with indoor and outdoor learning areas, connecting trails, and a nature-themed playground.

Encompassing 2,800 acres of public land, the area features steep valley cliffs, isolated prairies, wetlands, and the largest continuous, undisturbed forest in the state, making it a prime destination for adventure seekers.
