North Dakota Awards $15 Million in Destination Development Grants to Boost Statewide Tourism

North Dakota Tourism and Marketing has awarded $15 million in Destination Development Grants to 23 projects across the state, supporting tourism infrastructure improvements and encouraging long-term economic growth.

The competitive program drew 106 applications from 45 communities, with selected projects highlighting the state’s growing investment in travel, recreation, and community revitalization.

“Tourism plays an essential role in North Dakota, contributing to a strong economy by attracting visitors who spend money and pay taxes and helping to attract new residents and workforce,” Gov. Kelly Armstrong said, as reported by KVR Local News.

“This grant program will support projects that offer legendary experiences that make our state a unique destination,” Armstrong added.

Funding comes from the 69th Legislative Assembly, which established the program to strengthen local tourism economies through strategic development.

Among the recipients, the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo received $616,697 for grandstand improvements, while the Red River Zoo in Fargo was awarded $250,000 for a first-of-its-kind red panda habitat. Both projects are designed to attract year-round visitors and expand family-friendly entertainment options.

In Casselton, Icewind Brewing received $350,000 to develop a boutique brewery and lodging inside a historic downtown building, while Nome Schoolhouse secured $181,200 for its Barn to Yarn Experience, combining agritourism and education with new RV accommodations.

Larger projects include a $4 million grant to ND Country Fest in New Salem to construct permanent cabins, glamping sites, and a year-round performance stage, transforming the site into a multi-use venue for events and tourism.

In Medora, two initiatives will enhance the region’s appeal. The Badlands Gateway Trails project was awarded $462,457 to create an 8.1-mile trail system linking downtown Medora to the Badlands, while a $250,000 grant supports the new Medora Conference & Heritage Commons, a year-round facility for cultural and business events.

Devils Lake will benefit from two funded projects: the Boathouse Bunkhouse, receiving $488,369 for unique lakefront lodging, and 6 Mile Lodge, which secured $250,000 for expansion and new amenities including a sauna and kayak rentals.
