Icelandic State Park in northeastern North Dakota is set for a major upgrade following the acquisition of a 575,000 National Park Service grant. The funding, secured by the state’s Parks and Recreation Department, will be used to modernize campsites, add electrical hookups, and construct a new shower house, enhancing the park’s appeal to visitors.
The grant, awarded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), will support significant improvements to the campground’s infrastructure. The electrical system will be upgraded from 30-amp to 50-amp service, providing a more reliable power supply for campers.
New water services and hydrants will also be installed at each campsite, improving convenience for visitors.
U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) supported the reauthorization of the LWCF program in 2019. “LWCF awards allow states to further allocate these funds to support local public parks projects, state conservation, and expand outdoor recreation access,” a press release indicated.
Icelandic State Park, established in 1964, covers 912 acres along Lake Renwick’s shores. The park offers various recreational activities, including boating, swimming, fishing, and winter sports. Historic buildings and a nature preserve are also featured within the park boundaries.
According to its website, Icelandic State Park provides visitors with a rich blend of recreational activities and a glimpse into North Dakota’s homesteading heritage. Picnic areas shaded by ancient oak trees offer a spot for families and friends to unwind, while the campgrounds provide full amenities, including electrical hookups and modern comfort stations with showers.
Additionally, three sleeping cabins are available for rental from mid-May through the end of September, enhancing the park’s appeal for those looking to experience the great outdoors.
The park also features a range of facility amenities designed to enhance visitors’ experiences. These include a boat dock and ramp for easy access to the lake, concessions for snacks and refreshments, and restrooms.
