New York State Parks See Record-Breaking Visitation Numbers in 2022

New York state parks, historic sites, campgrounds, and trails set a new attendance record in 2022, with 79.5 million total visits, marking an increase of over a million visitors from the previous year. This is a remarkable milestone for the state, as attendance at state parks has steadily increased for over a decade, rising nearly 43% since 2008.

The COVID-19 pandemic played a significant role in the attendance spike, as people sought open spaces for safe recreation. However, the Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, attributes the rise in attendance to recent investments in revitalizing the park system, expanding open space, and protecting coastlines. These measures aim to ensure that generations to come can enjoy the diverse environment that the state has to offer.

The most visited state parks in 2022 include Niagara Falls State Park, with 9.4 million visits; Jones Beach State Park, with 8.5 million, Robert Moses State Park, with 3.8 million; Saratoga Spa, with 3.5 million; Sunken Meadow State Park, with 3.1 million, Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park, with 3 million, and Bear Mountain State Park, with 2.4 million visits.

The rise in attendance has been positive not only for the state but also for private campground owners or operators who have seen a similar increase in traffic. As the popularity of state parks has grown, many visitors have sought out nearby private campgrounds or RV parks for a place to stay, eat and enjoy outdoor activities.

Despite the pandemic, the New York State Parks have become an affordable destination for many. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery and endless recreational activities at the parks while being mindful of social distancing measures and taking precautions to stay safe.

The record-breaking attendance at New York State parks in 2022 is a testament to the state’s commitment to maintaining and promoting its natural beauty. New York’s parks and private campgrounds continue to thrive as more people turn to outdoor activities for a safe and affordable vacation.
