New York State has opened reservations for the 2025 camping season, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced, with most of the state’s 119 public campgrounds scheduled to open by May 16. Campers can now book sites up to nine months in advance, allowing for early planning at popular destinations across the state.
The campgrounds, managed by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Department of Environmental Conservation, are spread throughout the Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes, Thousand Islands, Long Island, and other scenic regions. Accommodations include campsites, cabins, and cottages.
“There’s no better way to ‘Unplug and Play’ than spending a night in New York State’s great outdoors,” Gov. Hochul said. “New York State campgrounds offer some of the best destinations to take a break from the daily stresses of life and reconnect with nature.”
Reservations are managed through ReserveAmerica, available online and by phone. Visitors can reserve spots from one day to nine months in advance of their stay. The reservation system’s opening hours vary seasonally, with early access provided during peak booking periods.
According to a press release, Environmental Conservation Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton emphasized the state’s commitment to inclusive access. “Everyone should be able to get outside and enjoy nature, and DEC campgrounds offer a unique opportunity to explore the great outdoors by providing a welcoming and safe experience,” she said.
To assist campers, the 2025 New York Camping Guide is now available both online and in print. It contains over 100 photos and listings for all state-run campgrounds, as well as maps, amenity details, reservation instructions, and fee information.
The state’s camping Loyalty Program also continues to offer incentives, allowing visitors to earn points for each dollar spent on overnight stays. Points may be redeemed toward future camping fees and are awarded upon departure.
For spontaneous travelers, ReserveAmerica’s “Camping This Weekend” feature helps users find last-minute campsite availability at various locations throughout the state.
Many campgrounds are expected to reach full capacity during peak summer weekends. Early reservations are encouraged for those seeking specific locations or dates, especially during holidays and school vacation periods.
