The Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday (New York) has expanded with the opening of its new Riverside section, adding 59 RV sites along the Ausable River to accommodate increasing demand for outdoor travel.
The Riverside section, which began welcoming campers this season, is located a quarter-mile from the campground’s existing mountainside section.
It offers 50/30 amp full hookup RV sites in both back-in and pull-thru configurations.
A dozen of the new sites feature KOA Patios, designed to enhance the outdoor living experience for guests. The expansion also includes a KampK9 dog park, reflecting KOA’s focus on pet-friendly accommodations.
“We’re proud to grow alongside this incredible community,” said Jill Currier, senior vice president, OAK operations at KOA.
“With the new Riverside section, we’re not only enhancing the camping experience but also boosting local tourism and helping more visitors connect with the beauty and adventure of the Ausable River and Whiteface area,” Currier added.
According to KOA’s 2024 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, camping plays a notable role in local economies.
Campers spent an estimated $61 billion nationwide in 2024, with the average camper spending about $200 per day during trips.
The report also found that 27% of campers are drawn to visiting small towns and another 27% are interested in food tourism, trends that align with the Lake Placid region’s cultural and culinary offerings.
The expansion at Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday supports KOA’s broader strategy to meet the growing interest in camping while fostering ties with host communities.
Earlier this year, KOA sponsored the Ausable River Two-Fly Challenge, a three-day event that combines fly fishing competition with conservation initiatives and community gatherings. The annual event features music, food, and activities along the Ausable River.
The Riverside section is located at 5636 NY-86, and the original Mountainside section remains at 5591 NY-86 in Wilmington. Both sections operate seasonally from May through October.
The property also includes an on-site motel that is open year-round, offering additional lodging options for travelers to the Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid areas.
