A new resource is available for those interested in outdoor activities with the launch of the Chautauqua County Interactive Trails Map and accompanying mobile app, accessible at CHQTrails.org.
This initiative, led by the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG) in collaboration with the Chautauqua County Government and Friends of Chautauqua County Greenways (FCCG), aims to enhance access to the county’s network of trails.
According to a press release, the interactive map allows users to explore hundreds of miles of trails for various activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and kayaking.
Users can filter trails based on activity and land ownership, providing a tailored experience for outdoor users. Trail details, including surfaces, length, and parking information, are also available, along with images of trailheads.
Jacob Bodway, CCPEG trail coordinator, highlighted the increased need for a comprehensive trail map following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As we witnessed more trail users exploring our trails, many for the first time, we also heard a renewed interest in a trail map that would provide information for trail users of varied experiences and abilities. I think the new countywide trail map does that and more,” Bodway said.
The mobile app, available on Avenza, uses GPS technology to offer real-time location tracking, even in remote areas without cell reception. The app includes several trail maps, including those for Boutwell Hill, Harris Hill, and North Harmony state forests. Additional maps are available on other platforms such as Trailforks, All Trails, and MTB Project.
Mark Geise, deputy county executive for economic development, emphasized the map’s role in promoting the county as a prime destination for outdoor recreation.
“We have such significant outdoor recreation assets, including more than 600 miles of recreational trails which we are actively working to improve,” said Geise.
The trail project received funding from the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation. Following an RFP process that attracted 15 proposals, CCPEG selected Barton & Loguidice and Adirondack Research to oversee the project.
