El Morro National Monument To Have Camel Corps Commemoration On Sept. 10-11

El Morro National Monument (New Mexico) will host U.S. Camel Corps Re-enactor Doug Baum and his camels on September 10-11 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm for the Camel Corps Commemoration event.

Over one hundred and fifty years ago, one of the United States’ most unique expeditions passed by the towering cliff face of El Morro, according to a news release.

A camel expedition sponsored by the US government passed through this area en route to California in 1857, leaving their unique mark in place and time. Mounted and packed to the fullest, U.S. Army camels proved their potential for western travel.

Event attendees can learn about the importance of camels in U.S. history through reenactments and educational programs this September weekend.

Besides Camel Corps expert Doug Baum and his live camels, this free event also features talks by historian Jerry Snow, hands-on activities and crafts for kids, and programs by park rangers.

The monument is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Presentations and children’s programming will run from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. A free shuttle bus will provide service from the Old School Gallery parking lot to El Morro Visitor Center.

For more information, please call the El Morro Visitor Center at 505-783-4226 ext. 801 or visit www.nps.gov/elmo or https://www.facebook.com/elmorro.nps.
