Under Canvas is expanding into New Mexico with a new glamping property planned near Santa Fe, marking the brand’s first camp in the state. Under Canvas Santa Fe is scheduled to open in April 2027 on 640 acres approximately 30 minutes by car from downtown Santa Fe.
The 45-tent property will border the Galisteo Basin Preserve, a nearly 10,000-acre high-desert area with more than 40 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The location will give guests access to outdoor recreation while remaining within driving distance of Santa Fe’s galleries, museums, restaurants, and historic downtown.
The development represents a shift from Under Canvas’ established model of locating camps near major national park destinations. Rather than serving primarily as a base for a single national park, the Santa Fe property is being positioned around a combination of outdoor recreation and access to an established cultural and tourism market.
Santa Fe has more than 250 galleries and 20 museums, while the city’s Canyon Road arts district includes more than 100 galleries and boutiques. The Santa Fe Plaza also provides access to historic architecture, shops, museums, and restaurants.
For outdoor hospitality operators, the location illustrates how glamping properties can potentially broaden their guest proposition by combining nature-based accommodation with proximity to established cultural attractions.
The camp’s 45 safari-style tents will be distributed across an upper terrace, a juniper-covered slope, and a lower meadow. According to Afar, accommodations will include a king-size bed, en suite bathroom with a pull-chain shower and low-flow toilet, private deck, wood-burning stove, and in-tent cooling using water-cooled fresh air.
Unlike conventional hotel accommodations, the tents will not have standard electrical outlets. Power will be provided for the cooling systems, while rechargeable battery packs will be available for guests’ personal devices. Wi-Fi will be limited to the lobby tent, maintaining a more limited connectivity model within guest accommodations.
Accommodation options will include Deluxe tents, larger Suites, and Stargazer tents with viewing windows above the bed. Some accommodations can be paired with separate Kids Tents containing two twin beds. Two-tent suites with adjoining decks will also be available for families and groups.
The property will introduce several features that differ from Under Canvas’ existing camp format. The company plans to offer hard-sided, temperature-controlled cabins in addition to canvas tents, although a specific opening date for the cabins has not yet been announced.
The Santa Fe camp will also be the company’s first property with on-site saunas and a dedicated event tent.
Food and programming will form another part of the operation. A seasonal café is planned to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with dishes influenced by regional flavors. Complimentary activities are expected to include live music, yoga, and nightly s’mores. Guests will have access to hiking and biking trails on the property as well as the larger trail system at the neighboring preserve.
The high-desert environment will also influence the property’s approach to outdoor lighting. “The high desert is really the whole experience,” Under Canvas CEO Noah Brodsky told Afar. “It’s a lot of open country, and we want to keep it that way.”
Outdoor lighting at the property will follow standards from DarkSky International, an organization focused on reducing light pollution. Under Canvas Lake Powell–Grand Staircase in southern Utah became the first lodging property to receive DarkSky certification in 2023, with other Under Canvas locations subsequently earning the designation. The company has not announced whether Under Canvas Santa Fe will pursue certification.
Reservations are currently open for the April-through-October 2027 season, with rates starting at $279 per night before taxes and fees. The property will also participate in World of Hyatt, enabling members to earn and redeem points for stays.
Under Canvas opened its first camp near West Yellowstone, Montana, in 2012. The company subsequently expanded its portfolio with Ulum near Moab in 2023 and introduced its Outdoor Collection of nature-focused properties in 2025.
The Santa Fe development will bring the company’s planned portfolio to 18 properties and adds a destination-oriented model that combines glamping, outdoor recreation, cultural tourism, and event-oriented amenities.
