NJ’s Sandy Hook Revives Cold War Barracks for Unique Camping Stay

A historic Cold War-era Nike missile site at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, has reopened as a camping destination, offering visitors a chance to stay overnight in restored 1950s U.S. Army barracks.

Operated by the National Park Service (NPS), the site sits behind the Nike Missile Radar installation near parking lot L and became available for reservations this summer, with bookings open until July 13.

According to an article published by NJ True Jersey on June 22, the campground features three tented barracks: two without bed frames and one furnished with metal bed frames, accommodating campers who prefer sleeping on beds or on the ground.

Each barrack can house groups of up to 30 campers, making the site an option for organized outings or family gatherings interested in an unconventional outdoor stay.

Amenities also include two charcoal grills, designated parking, a fresh water station, secure lock boxes, and portable toilets.

Campers also have access to a nearby campground store, which sells the only approved firewood for use at Sandy Hook.

“Firewood is available for purchase at the store located within the public campground office. Please purchase firewood upon check-in. No outside wood is permitted. Collecting firewood in the park is not permitted. There is a foot path from the campsite to access the camp store, the camping site’s announcement indicates.

Restroom facilities with flushable toilets and sinks are located within the park to support overnight guests and day visitors.

During its military years, Sandy Hook’s radar units tracked enemy aircraft while soldiers, known as “Ready Crews,” lived on-site to operate the Nike air defense missiles stationed one mile south of the barracks.

Constructed between 1954 and 1956, the Nike radar and missile launch sites were part of a nationwide network designed to defend major cities during the Cold War.

The Sandy Hook Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to preserving the area’s natural and historic resources, contributed $100,000 to help restore the barracks for public use.
