Thor Industries has unveiled a groundbreaking hybrid motorhome concept at RV Open House in Elkhart, Indiana. The event, held from September 23rd to 25th at the RV Hall of Fame, showcased this innovative vehicle to dealers. Developed in collaboration with Harbinger Motors, the concept represents a significant step forward in RV technology and sustainability according to an article by yahoo tech.
The hybrid Class A motorhome features an advanced battery pack paired with a gasoline range extender. It can be equipped with three to six 35 kWh batteries, offering a total capacity of up to 210 kWh. This configuration provides an estimated range of 500 miles using both electric and gasoline power. The vehicle’s exterior boasts an aerodynamic design, approximately 20% more efficient due to its tapered front and rear, and incorporates an 800-volt electrical system.
Bob Martin, Thor Industries President and CEO, emphasized the importance of electrification in the future of RVing. The hybrid platform’s development is part of Thor’s global innovation strategy, with teams in Elkhart and Germany focusing on long-term innovation and enhancing the consumer experience.
Thor’s partnership with Harbinger, which began in 2022, has been crucial in developing this concept. John Harris, CEO and Co-Founder of Harbinger Motors, highlighted the collaboration’s role in advancing the RV sector and improving the RVing experience.
The hybrid motorhome offers improved performance with quicker acceleration and a tighter turning radius. It features advanced technologies such as a double-wishbone front suspension, steer-by-wire system, and Advanced Driver Assistance System features. The vehicle’s eco-friendly capabilities are further enhanced by solar power integration.
Thor is actively working with stakeholders to develop RV-friendly charging stations, focusing on areas around national parks and popular RV destinations. The company is also educating these regions about available funding for charging infrastructure.
The hybrid RVs are expected to qualify as Near-Zero Emission Vehicles under California Air Resources Board legislation, emitting significantly fewer pollutants than traditional combustion engine vehicles. Additionally, the vehicle’s battery pack can provide backup home power and may allow owners to sell power back to the grid in the future.
Thor Industries aims to make these hybrid motorhomes commercially available in 2025 through its family of companies, marking a significant advancement in RV technology and sustainable travel.
