Nebraska’s Sherman Reservoir and Box Butte Reservoir state recreation areas announced the opening of new and expanded campgrounds, ready for reservations starting yesterday, April 8.
At Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area, near Loup City, the West Ridge Campground has undergone an expansion, now offering 61 campsites equipped with Electric Plus (30/50 amp) service, according to a press release. To accommodate both planners and spontaneous travelers, the reservation policy has been designed to allocate half of the sites to advance reservations, while the remaining half will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Similarly, Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area, located near Hemingford, has introduced a new campground that includes 20 Electric Plus (30/50 amp) campsites. This addition is complemented by a modern shower house and a dump station, enhancing the convenience for campers. The campground also adopts a balanced reservation approach, with half of the sites reservable and the remainder open for walk-in campers. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment, particularly the newly planted grass that the park is diligently working to establish.
Reservations for both locations can be made for stays beginning May 1, with the booking process opening at 9 a.m. Central time on April 8. Campers have the option to secure their spots through OutdoorNebraska.gov, the Reserve America Reservation App, or by contacting the Nebraska Game and Parks Call Center.
These projects have been largely supported by the Nebraska Capital Maintenance Fund, established by the Legislature in 2016 to aid in the preservation of public outdoor recreation facilities and parklands. Additional funding comes from the Nebraska Game and Parks’ funds, which are generated through user fees within the state park system.
Nebraska’s state parks offer a wide array of recreational opportunities, catering to both RV and tent campers. These parks are gateways to experiencing the natural beauty of Nebraska, offering a chance to get closer to nature, whether through a leisurely day enjoying park amenities or an evening around a campfire.
The state parks showcase an extensive network of trails, catering to a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. The introduction of an interactive trail map further enriches the outdoor experience, allowing visitors to easily locate trails that match their interests and abilities.
