The Nunda Shoal boat ramp at Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area in Garfield (Nebraska) and Loup counties has reopened following a major construction project aimed at improving infrastructure and accessibility, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
According to a press release, the adjacent Nunda Shoal Campground reopened on June 6. Reservations for the rest of the 2025 season can be made through OutdoorNebraska.gov.
This reopening marks the completion of a nearly year-long effort to enhance visitor access and safety at one of Nebraska’s popular outdoor recreation areas.
“The upgrades also brought the area into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act,” the park indicates.
Located in the heart of Nebraska’s scenic Sandhills, Calamus State Recreation Area (SRA) is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a wide variety of activities. This state-managed site offers visitors opportunities to camp, fish, boat, hike, swim, and enjoy leisurely picnics amidst a tranquil setting.
The area features a 5,123-acre lake surrounded by 4,958 acres of gently rolling prairie, covered in native grasses and wildflowers.
Visitors can take advantage of a wide range of amenities at Calamus SRA, including designated areas for boating, hunting, and picnicking, as well as a swimming beach and playgrounds for family fun.
Camping at Calamus SRA is well-supported, with Electric Plus and Basic campsites available across three campgrounds: Homestead Knolls, Nunda Shoal, and Valley View Flat.
These campgrounds are equipped with shower houses, modern restrooms, and mature trees that offer natural shade.
Campers will find all sites conveniently located within walking distance of the lake, and a dump and fill station is located at Little York Point. Designated parking lot camping is also permitted at Valley View Flat and Hannaman Bayou campgrounds.
