Tallgrass Retreat, a new glamping destination planned just outside of Neligh, is set to open in spring 2026.
The retreat is being built on 44 acres along the Elkhorn River, offering access to a fully stocked lake and views across the river into Riverside Park. The site was selected for its natural setting and proximity to the community.
Plans call for 24 raised glamping domes, with 12 insulated units included in the first phase.
Each dome will feature electricity, air conditioning, heating, and high-end bedding. All units are designed to sit above the floodplain. The retreat will operate under the Ferncrest brand, which manages similar properties in Maine, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania.
Beyond glamping domes, the retreat will feature additional amenities, including a spa with a wood-fired sauna and hot tub, cabins, RV sites, and an event center.
Shannon Baumgartner, chief executive officer of Tallgrass Retreat, purchased the land after years of visiting Northeast Nebraska with his family. Originally from Fremont, California, Baumgartner said his ties to the area made Neligh an ideal location for the project.
Baumgartner partnered with his nephew, Jon Baumgartner of Omaha, and appointed his son, William Baumgartner, as on-site manager. William recently relocated to Neligh with his daughter to oversee development.
William said the community’s character played a role in his decision to move. “What I like most about Neligh is the people and how friendly, how genuine they are,” he said, as reported by Norfolk Daily News on August 22.
“I value that a lot in people, so that’s what I liked about moving here. It drew me in, and it will be good for my daughter,” William added.
Shannon and his wife, Jennifer, spent time at the Antelope County Fair in August to introduce the retreat to residents.
The couple also expressed interest in supporting local traditions, including hopes of reviving Neligh’s former Bread and Jam Festival on the property.
