National Park Service Hits Record High with 325.5 Million Visits in 2023 Across 400 Parks

National Park Service (NPS) reported that 400 national parks across the United States welcomed 325.5 million visits in 2023. This figure marks an increase, with 13 million more visits, or a 4% rise, compared to the previous year.

Visitation data help with the NPS’s management strategies, aiming to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the parks’ natural and cultural integrity. The NPS Visitor Statistics Dashboard, an online tool, offers comprehensive visitation data for each park, providing insights into trends and enabling better resource allocation and visitor management.

The National Park System, comprising 428 parks, saw 400 of these parks reporting visitation figures in 2023.  The increase in visitation numbers highlights a sustained interest in outdoor recreation and exploring the park’s natural beauty.

Among the parks, Nebraska’s Scotts Bluff National Monument reached 174,267 visitors in 2023. The early months of 2023 saw the monument grappling with cold and snowy weather, initially leading to decreased visitation. The monument, known for its significant natural and historical value, attracted over 20,000 visitors monthly from May through September.

“Cold, snowy weather at the beginning of the year reduced visitation last January, February, and March. However, visitation numbers rebounded starting in April, and remained strong through the end of the year,” Acting Superintendent Britt Salape said.

Monument staff recommend April and October as ideal times for visits, offering smaller crowds and generally pleasant weather. The Scotts Bluff National Monument is near NPS sites like Fort Laramie National Historic Site and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

Scotts Bluff National Monument is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. This iconic landmark offers a range of recreational activities set against the backdrop of its majestic bluffs and rich historical tapestry.

Cycling is another popular activity, with designated paths allowing for a leisurely exploration of the monument’s surroundings. Photographers and nature lovers will find endless inspiration in the changing light on the bluffs, the diverse flora and fauna, and the striking landscapes that change with the seasons.
