The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announced that Hernando Point Campground at Arkabutla Lake in Mississippi will reopen to the public on June 14 following a multi-year closure prompted by storm damage and subsequent rehabilitation work.
Located in a hardwood upland area near a day-use zone, Hernando Point Campground offers lake views and recreational amenities, including a playground, pavilion, and swimming area.
During the extended closure, crews completed various upgrades, including the installation of new sewer hookups at each campsite.
Thirty-five of the campground’s sites will be available starting June 14.
The remaining sites are also expected to open by July 1. Reservations for available campsites can be made online.
According to an article published by VDN on June 11, the USACE cautioned that due to recent rainfall and ongoing work in the area, campers should expect softer-than-normal ground conditions.
Visitors are advised to prepare accordingly when navigating the campground.
Construction and cleanup efforts have focused on removing debris and damaged trees caused by previous weather events. These improvements aim to enhance guest safety and the overall camping experience.
Arkabutla Lake offers a wide range of outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Visitors can enjoy fishing, or take to the water by boat to explore the expansive lake.
The area also offers opportunities for hiking and biking, with several trails winding around the lake and into the surrounding forest.
Hikers can explore a variety of scenic trails that provide both recreation and education. The Coldwater River Nature Trail System features two traditional hiking paths along with an interpretive trail that offers insights into the local ecosystem and wildlife.
Camping is popular here, with amenities like flush toilets, showers and drinking water making for a more comfortable stay in the great outdoors.
