Some Minnesota State Parks to Limit Access During Deer Hunting

Many Northland (Minnesota) state parks are scheduled to have restricted access over the next few weeks as part of special hunts for deer aimed at reducing the deer population to allow native flora to return to normal state.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, accessibility to the parks differs across the state during hunts. Some state parks are accessible to visitors of all ages, others are restricted to public access, and others are accessible only to hunters with special permits.

Many Minnesota state parks hold managed hunts as a way to help control the deer population in the parks. Our goal is to ensure healthy natural communities. When too many deer are in one area, the native plants and animals are negatively affected,” Minnesota DNR indicated in a website post.

The hunting schedule for Banning State Park is October 29-30, November 5-20 for the Cascade River State Park, and Crow Wing State Park from December 3-7, and hunting for Gooseberry Falls State Park starts between November 5-20.

The deadlines have passed for adults and youth to apply for permits to participate in hunts. For a list of state parks and recreation areas either closed or open in the 2022 hunting season and beyond, visit mndnr.gov/parkhunts
