The reconstruction of Lakeview Campground at Sibley State Park in rural New London, Minnesota, is progressing despite challenges posed by a wet summer. Recent dry conditions have allowed workers to advance the renovation project, which remains on schedule for a grand opening in the 2025 camping season.
“The Lakeview Campground will be closed to the public until spring 2025 for comprehensive infrastructure and facilities redevelopment. The dump station will also be closed for all of 2024 as part of this same project. Drinking water is available at the office for filling water tanks,” the park’s announcement stated.
The campground was developed by Company 1785 of the Veterans Conservation Corps (VCC). Four historic buildings featuring original stonework are being remodeled. Efforts focus on preserving their exterior character while updating the interiors. All roofs have also been replaced, and much of the stone repair work has been completed.
The project represents a substantial investment in Sibley State Park. Approximately $3.9 million is provided by Minnesota legacy funds, sourced from a voter-approved state sales tax. An additional $935,000 comes from the “Get Out More” fund, approved by the 2023 Minnesota Legislature.
This summer’s wetness posed significant challenges for the construction team, particularly for earth-moving work and landscaping plans. Park Supervisor Jeremy Gehrke noted, “Water was running not necessarily where we thought it would run.”
According to an article published by West Central Tribune, the redesigned campground will feature 41 camping sites, including 40 electric sites and one non-electric site, a reduction from the previous 71. The new sites will range from 1,000 to 1,500 square feet, more than doubling the size of the original sites to accommodate larger RVs and provide more space for amenities.
Despite the ongoing construction, Sibley State Park has remained popular, with only a slight decrease in weekday activity at the nearby beach on Lake Andrew. Weekend beach usage has remained busy.
