Petoskey State Park Campground Closure Begins Sept. 3 for Major Utility Upgrades

The campground at Petoskey State Park in Michigan closed Wednesday, Sept. 3, for sewer and sanitation system upgrades. The closure is expected to last until mid-May 2026, according to the park’s announcement.

While the campground and nearby trails will remain closed during construction, trails could still reopen this winter. “The entire park, including the day-use area, is scheduled, but this may happen sooner if construction is ahead of schedule. Updates on winter trail use will be provided later,” the park’s announcement adds.

The beach at Petoskey State Park is expected to remain open through September, with all beach facilities scheduled to close Oct. 1. The beach will stay accessible until contractors determine any safety or liability concerns.

“We’re trying to keep the beach open as long as possible,” Eric Petro, a seasonal employee at the park, told the Petoskey News-Review.

The closure is expected to modernize the sewer and sanitation upgrades necessary to meet the standards and accommodate the heavy use the park experiences during peak season.

Located at 2475 M-119, Petoskey State Park offers multiple walking trails and access to dunes and a sandy beach.

The park is situated along the Little Traverse Wheelway, a popular route for cyclists traveling the shoreline of Little Traverse Bay.

Visitors to the park have access to a wide range of amenities and activities, including swimming, paddling, biking, hiking, and winter options such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Facilities on site feature a beach house, modern restrooms, vault toilets, picnic areas and shelters, a playground, concessions, and paddlesport rentals.

Additional conveniences include a sanitation station, recycling services, and pet-friendly features, while opportunities such as metal detecting and wildlife viewing from an observation platform add to the park’s appeal.

Water access points throughout the area support both boating and paddling, making the park a versatile destination year-round.
