The Ottawa National Forest is considering expanding its land holdings near the Black River Harbor Recreation Area. Darla Lenz, forest supervisor, recently informed the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners about a potential acquisition of nearly 11 acres adjacent to the existing campground.
The land, under consideration, is currently owned by The Nature Conservancy. According to Lenz, the aim is to “adjust land ownership to facilitate restoration, protection, and management of resources, and to provide recreation opportunities.”
Lenz noted that the acquisition could “provide outstanding recreation opportunities for people to achieve solitude or primitive and unconfined recreation” while facilitating wildlife viewing and nature appreciation.
“Acquiring the property would secure the land adjacent to the campground, ensuring the parcel would not be developed, providing the unique camping experiences for future generations,” said Lenz in a letter to the board, as reported by Your Daily Globe.
According to its website, The Black River Harbor Recreation Area, known for its waterfalls, picturesque beaches, and scenic hiking trails, is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Black River Harbor Recreation Area also offers various activities, including hiking, backpacking, picnicking, swimming, fishing, and boating. The harbor is also one of the few access points to Lake Superior, making boating a popular summer activity among visitors.
Additionally, the area features a historic pavilion built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), providing a space for gatherings and events. The Black River Harbor Campground boasts 39 designated camping sites with picnic tables and facilities, including vault and flush toilets. Open from May 24 to October 15, campers can stay for up to 14 days, enjoying a blend of recreational amenities in a serene, natural environment.
