Michigan’s Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground to Close for $5.4 Million Upgrade

The campground at Sleepy Hollow State Park in Michigan is set to close during the summer of 2025 to undergo significant infrastructure improvements. This $5.4 million project is part of a broader initiative to upgrade facilities across state parks, aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and modernizing amenities.

Key upgrades planned for Sleepy Hollow include the replacement of its aging shower building, paving campground roads, updating the beach building, and adding water and sewer hookups for RV sites, as reported by WILX Media.

These changes aim to bring the campground up to date with modern standards, catering to the growing demand for enhanced amenities among outdoor enthusiasts.

Sleepy Hollow State Park spans over 2,600 acres of diverse landscapes, featuring a winding river that meanders through forests, open fields, and well-maintained trails.

At the heart of the park lies Lake Ovid, a 410-acre reservoir created by damming the Little Maple River. This setting offers year-round recreational opportunities, including 181 modern campsites, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of natural beauty and convenience.

The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, boasting sightings of over 228 bird species. Visitors can spot everything from common Blue Jays and Eastern Bluebirds to more elusive species like Bonaparte’s Gull and Bald Eagles.

Additionally, Sleepy Hollow’s trails provide access to a variety of ecosystems, including prairie grasses, hardwood forests, and stands of pine trees.

With 16 miles of trails for hiking and biking, 6.5 miles designated for horseback riding and dog sledding, and areas for snowshoeing, the park caters to a wide range of activities.

Accessibility is also a priority, with features such as a floating beach wheelchair, Amigo scooter, and two accessible hunting blinds, including one with a hydraulic lift, available at no cost to visitors.
