Michigan campers can expect to see higher prices at state park campsites beginning Aug. 1, as the Department of Natural Resources rolls out its first fee adjustment in three years.
The new rates, approved by the Michigan State Park Advisory Committee in August 2024, will affect most overnight accommodations across the state’s extensive parks system.
The DNR said the increases are necessary to fund upgrades to park facilities and improve visitor experience.
According to the agency, 97% of its operating budget comes from user fees and royalties, while only 3% is funded through Michigan’s General Fund.
Under the new fee structure, nightly rates for modern and semi-modern campsites will increase between $4 and $10, depending on location and the level of service provided.
Campsites offering features like 50-amp electrical service and full hookups will be priced at the higher end of the range.
According to an article published by News-Review on July 9, rates for overnight lodging at state parks will range from $60 to $120 per night.
Deluxe lodging accommodations will cost $160 per night.
Modern lodges will also see phased rate adjustments over the next two years, with all locations reaching a base rate of $236 per night by 2027.
According to the DNR, some lodges may charge higher rates based on occupancy levels or seasonal demand.
In addition to nightly stays, the DNR will implement new fees for intermittent camping and equipment storage. These charges are intended to ensure appropriate use of park space during periods between bookings or while storing unused camping gear.
Adventure awaits across Michigan’s 103 state parks, where visitors can explore a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, swimming, fishing, and boating.
With options ranging from modern lodging to rustic camping, each park offers unique opportunities to connect with nature.
Guests can enjoy day trips filled with family-friendly programs and events or stay overnight in well-equipped campgrounds to experience the full beauty of Michigan’s natural landscapes.
