Kona Hills Campgrounds Begins Taking Reservations for 2025 Season

After years of planning and development, Kona Hills Campgrounds is officially open for reservations for its inaugural 2025 season.

Located in the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the campground aims to provide visitors with a rustic, nature-focused experience. This opening marks the culmination of a five-year process involving planning, permitting, and construction, made possible in part by a $100,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).

The grant from MDARD was instrumental in completing essential infrastructure projects, including a new entrance and improvements to access roads. Additionally, a Special Use Permit from Sands Township was modified to accommodate the campground’s operations.

For its first season, Kona Hills Campgrounds will offer 40 campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. The sites will provide a basic, no-frills camping experience, with potable water available through a hand pump well.

To meet immediate sanitary needs, the campground will rely on portable toilets, which will be cleaned weekly. The initial offerings also emphasize simplicity and connection with nature.

Guests can expect gravel pathways, peaceful surroundings, and unique views of Marquette County’s landscape.

Looking ahead, Kona Hills Campgrounds has plans for growth. Future phases of development include permanent restroom and shower facilities, additional campsites, and expanded recreational amenities. The campground also aims to enhance access to nearby trails and scenic viewpoints, further integrating the property with the region’s outdoor offerings.

Co-owner Jeremy Johnson envisions the campground as a gateway to the natural beauty of Marquette County.

“We’re excited to finally open and share this property with the public,” Johnson said in a press release. “Although we’re starting small, every campsite reservation contributes to our long-term goal of creating a unique destination for both visitors and the local community. Progress over perfection has always been our philosophy, and this is just the beginning.”

Johnson highlighted the significance of the campground. “This land has some of the most unique features and views in Marquette County and it’s been blocked from public access for decades. The views of Lake Superior are just as iconic as Sugarloaf, yet no one gets to enjoy it. Our goal is to make it accessible for the local community.”
