Kona Hills Campground Opens in Marquette, Filling Short-Term Lodging Gap

Kona Hills Campground, located just outside Marquette, Michigan, officially opened to campers on May 30, offering 40 rustic campsites across 80 acres of elevated terrain overlooking Lake Superior.

The property, situated 200 feet above the lake and adjacent to the southern Huron Mountain range, Presque Isle, and the city of Marquette, was developed by lifelong friends and Marquette natives Jeremy Johnson, Devin Mahoney, and Tim Piirala.

The trio purchased the land in 2020 after spotting a “for sale” sign along the highway and have since focused on creating a nature-oriented campground that emphasizes conservation.

The site includes a combination of walk-in and drive-in campsites, each outfitted with picnic tables and walled fire rings. Eight of the sites can accommodate RVs up to 24 feet in length, though there are no water or electric hookups available, and the use of gas generators is not permitted.

Potable water is provided through a hand pump connected to a deep artesian well, and restroom facilities consist of portable toilets. The campground will remain open through October.

Development of the campground required navigating regulatory processes, with Senator Ed McBroom offering key support in obtaining permits through the Michigan Department of Energy, Great Lakes, and Energy.

“Kona Hills Campground is a perfect example of innovation, conservation, and providing a resource that addresses unmet needs in the Marquette area,” McBroom told Rural Innovation Exchange. “Kona Hills Campground is a wonderful addition to the Marquette landscape.”

The $1.5 million project was financed by the founders in partnership with the Peoples State Bank of Munising and received a $100,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Shubbe Consulting and Rock Solid Trail Contracting, an internationally recognized trail design firm based in Copper Harbor, handled the site’s design and layout.

Named for the rare Kona Dolomite found on the property, which is known for its distinct coloration and exists only in this region, the campground aims to appeal to visitors seeking a quiet and environmentally conscious camping experience.

Kona Hills opens amid a shifting landscape in Michigan’s camping industry. More than 20 state-managed campgrounds have been closed either partially or entirely this season, contributing to a gap in short-term accommodations across the state.

The Marquette area, in particular, has experienced long-standing demand for additional visitor lodging.

For outdoor hospitality operators, the Kona Hills development illustrates how private initiatives can respond to regional market gaps through targeted investment and thoughtful planning.

The campground’s low-impact approach may be of particular interest to business owners evaluating alternative models that prioritize sustainability while appealing to the increasing number of travelers interested in rustic or nature-based experiences.

Looking ahead, the Kona Hills team has plans for further improvements following the 2025 season.

Planned additions include permanent bathhouses, a fully graveled road loop to enhance access, and new glamping accommodations for visitors seeking a more curated experience.

The owners are also exploring recreational enhancements, such as ice and rock climbing options and the integration of private trails with regional trail systems.
