Massachusetts Becomes 18th State to Establish Office of Outdoor Recreation

Undoubtedly, the outdoor recreation industry is ever-growing and is projected to create more opportunities for everyone in the future.

Before the year ended, another breakthrough for the outdoor recreation industry was made as Massachusetts became the 18th state to establish an Office of Outdoor Recreation.

According to a LinkedIn post from the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), the new office will be located at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and will help enhance outdoor recreational opportunities throughout the Commonwealth and its associated economic, environmental, and quality-of-life benefits.

“The creation of the Office of Outdoor Recreation is a huge step forward for Massachusetts, a state that offers a wide diversity of outstanding recreation opportunities,” said Jessica (Wahl) Turner, president of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable.

Turner highlighted that the outdoor recreation industry in Massachusetts grew 24% in the past year, which has helped create employment opportunities, paved the way for supporting rural communities, and promoted the conservation of the Commonwealth’s natural resources.

As per ORR, Massachusetts joined Maryland and Arkansas as the most recent states to establish an Office of Outdoor Recreation since 2020.

The release emphasized that 18 states across the U.S. now have established offices dedicated to the outdoor recreation economy.

RV Industry Association Vice President of Government Affairs Jay Landers said that the creation of an Office of Outdoor Recreation in Massachusetts shows the state’s commitment to prioritizing the growth of outdoor recreation and supporting the thriving RV industry.

“In addition to outdoor recreation as a whole, this office supports the more than 200 RV businesses who create nearly 6,000 jobs and pay $451 million in wages in Massachusetts,” Landers ended.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), Massachusetts’ outdoor recreation economy accounted for $9.5 billion in GDP (1.5% of state GDP) and generated 93,422 jobs in 2021

It’s inspiring to see Massachusetts establishing an Office of Outdoor Recreation, reflecting the industry’s growth and potential. I’m interested in the initiatives this office plans to implement to enhance recreational opportunities across the state and the potential collaborations with stakeholders to boost the economy and employment opportunities. It’s a meaningful step forward for the state, and I’m eager to see the positive impact it will have.
